WEATHER WATCH

We had quite the monsoon storm roll through the Valley on Sunday. I’m sure you had strong winds at your house, my yard had a few million leaves on the ground once it stopped!

The storm caused issues for many boaters at Lake Pleasant, beaching and capsizing several boats. If you haven’t seen the videos, check it out. (link)

This week has been somewhat mild in regards to temperatures and it looks to continue through the weekend.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Southbound I-17 closure

Southbound I-17 will be closed between Loop 303 and Happy Valley Road from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. This caused lots of delays in the past, so be sure and plan ahead if you need to use the I-17 this weekend. (link)

51st Avenue is open again

Construction has completed on the sewer improvements at the intersection of 51st & the Loop 101. Both exits from the 101 are open again and traffic is allowed in all directions on the frontage road and 51st Avenue.

Big Lots announces store closures

National retail chain Big Lots has announced they will be closing 12 stores in Arizona, which includes their location next to Arrowhead Mall (link)

FOOD NEWS

LaMar’s Donuts & Coffee expanding

Missouri based donut chain has plans for major expansion, and Arizona is one of its top priorities. LaMar’s has a location in North Phoenix, and they are know for their handmade donuts. They are one of the few donut shops that offer crushed peanuts as an option, so they are one of my favorites. Have you ever had their donuts? (link & map)

Barley & Smoke in Peoria makes speakeasy Top 10 list

Barley & Smoke, part of Peoria Artisan Brewery, is tucked behind the brewpub’s kitchen, with the open kitchen & bar as the focal point. They offer a variety of hand crafted cocktails and a unique dining experience. Reservations are recommended and there is a business casual dress code. (Top 10 list, link & map)

Tierra Mia Tacos is now open

Located next to Dunkin’ Donuts at 59th Ave & Bell Road (by the Walmart) Tierra Mia is now open. If you’re craving tacos, go try someplace new! (link & map)

EVENTS

AJ’s Fine Food Little Chefs Club

The next Little Chefs Club at AJ’s Fine Foods is August 10th and they will be making Hatch Chile Guacamole. Visit the customer service desk at the store to register. (link)

Back to school ERAS Bash at Arrowhead Towne Center

ATC is hosting a free family event on July 27th from 2-4pm. Activities include, free games with prizes, friendship bracelet making, hair braiding station, Sephora glam station, and a ‘Tay-Tay’ photo op (link)

NEIGHBORHOOD HIGHLIGHT

Arrowhead has variety of small parks & spots where you can take a break from your day and enjoy a moment outdoors, even in this crazy summer heat. One of my favorites is Waterfall Park in Arrowhead Lakes. There are a few benches and a picnic table where you can sit to enjoy the view of the lake & mountains and the sound of the waterfalls. Three hikers rescued from Camelback Mountain

Dear everyone, STAY OUT OF THE DESERT AND OFF THE TRAILS!!!!! It is too hot to be out there, no matter what shape you are in. When you can’t make it back off the trail, you put dozens of first responder lives at risk to save you. We are all tired of the headlines every week about tourists and hikers having to be rescued or dying on the trails. C’mon people, this isn’t hard. I’ll put my soapbox away now… (link)

Sky Harbor parking prices on the rise, again.

For the second time in three years, rates for parking at Sky Harbor Airport are going up. The new rates take effect October 1, 2024. (link)

One of my favorite things about Arrowhead & Phoenix, is when we have a stormy day either in the summer or winter, almost every time the day still ends with a beautiful sky & sunset.
