Fried chicken & smelly water. Is Safeway closing?

It’s Monday, time for another great week here in Arrowhead Ranch.

WEATHER WATCH

The start of monsoon season was a bit of a false start. We had three days in a row of storms in late June, but its been nothing of note since.

A bit of relief this week, as the forecasted highs are not in the 110s. Maybe we’ll get lucky and the cooler temps will bring more monsoon activity.

COMMUNITY NEWS

More odor problems at Arrowhead Country Club

After lots of attention regarding issues with the lake on the 6th hole at Arrowhead Country Club, they are deal with more odor problems at the lake on the 8th hole. (link)

Couple makes $5 million donation to PCH Arrowhead

Residents of the West Valley since 1966, Jerry & Vickie Moyes made this donation in an effort to help PCH provide the best facilities to support families in need of pediatric hospital care. (link)

Is Safeway closing?

Short answer is NO. The Safeway and Albertsons stores in our area are NOT closing and there seems to be some confusion around the news last week and the list of stores published in most articles.

The headline used the word ‘offload’ and I think it caused some of the uncertainty. These stores are being sold to a third party operator in an effort to facilitate the Kroger & Safeway merger. (link)

Slim Chickens to open this week

As if you were not satisfied with the 47 other fried chicken options here in the NW valley, Slim Chickens is opening their third Phoenix location on Happy Valley Road near Sandra Day O’Connor High School. (link & map)

Tiki Star is open at Park West

A new tiki themed bar & restaurant is open at the Park West shopping center in Peoria, featuring fun cocktails and a menu of Polynesian and Asian inspired cuisine. (link & map)

EVENTS

The King is back at Haus Murphy

An Elvis show and a wiener schnitzel? Cmon now, does it get better than that? Haus Murphy in Downtown Glendale is hosting this event on August 10, 2024. Visit their website to make reservations. (link)

Arizona Cardinals announce Training Camp schedule

Hard to believe it may be time for football when its 132° outside, but it will be here before you know it. The Arizona Cardinals have published their schedule for training camp at Start Farm Stadium in Glendale. (link)

The first session is on July 25th and they are free, but you must have a ticket. (link)

VALLEY NEWS

City of Glendale has partnered with Valley Metro to offer a new ride service for residents with disabilities. RideChoice will operate 24/7 and on holidays and rides start at $3. (link)

Harkins Theaters has completed the first remodeling phase of its location at Park West in Peoria. The updates include the theater’s new CINÉXL auditorium with lounger reclining seats and Dolby Atmos sound. (link)

NEIGHBORHOOD HIGHLIGHT

Have you ever been to the Viewing Blinds in Thunderbird Conservation Park? They’re located on the east side of 59th Ave just north of Deer Valley Road. It is easy to miss the parking lot as you drive past, so many residents are not aware of this cool spot where you can hang out next to the lake and enjoy the bird watching. (map)
